Rising at the highest point in Cortona, the Monastery occupies a place steeped in history. Known since Roman times for its abundant waters-a large cistern called the “Bath of Bacchus” once stood here-this place has been a sanctuary for centuries.
The original structure dates back to the 1400s, and over the centuries, the Monastery has been the refuge first for the confraternity of St. Roch, then the Dominican Monks, the Servants of Mary and finally the Cistercian Monks.
